In this study published in the Journal of American Medical Association, Dutch scientists tested whether day-long light exposure sufficient to affect the circadian rhythm can slow down the rate of cognitive decline in Persons with moderate dementia living in 12 group-care facilities. This was accomplished through the use of ceiling-mounted fixtures with Plexiglas diffusers containing an equal amount of Philips TLD 840 and 940 fluorescent tubes, turned on between approximately 9 AM and 6 PM to achieve an exposure of approximately 1000 lux. In 3.5 years of follow-up, this light condition was able to improve a measure of cognitive function (Mini-Mental State Examination) by 0.9 points at all time points, mood and daily functions.
